MagicWaves

I've been working on the beautiful MagicWaves pattern this last week, using Ella Ra Lace Merino yarn. It wasn't until I blocked a little piece of it out, so that I could take a pretty picture of it, that I realised how fantastic this pattern is. The designer, Kieran Foley, says that the pattern was inspired by the 'rippling surface of the sea' and when you pin it out I don't think there's any doubt that he's achieved his purpose. If I look at it for long enough I start to feel the movement of the waves, and if I really look for long enough, the scarf seems to develop a 3D effect. I know, it sounds like I'm going a bit crazy, which is possible, but I really am impressed with the way this pattern is developing.

I'm planning to use most of the skein to make the scarf, there are two versions of it in the pattern, one with 101 stitches, the other with 71. My intention was to start with the 101, but after casting on about three times and not being able to work out why my stitches didn't work with the chart, I gave up - only later to realise that I was meant to cast on 101 stitches, not 110. Note to self, wear glasses when knitting, and read pattern before proceeding. Anyway, I'm very happy that I am managing fine with the smaller scarf, and think that it's really going to be the right size for me - I don't generally like the very large scarves/shawls and prefer something shorter and lighter around my neck at this time of year.

The pattern is in chart form, and it's a very clear and well-written chart. I find that most nights (if I manage to stay awake) I can do one whole repeat, which is about 30 rows of knitting. Lots of fun, and absolutely can not wait until it's done and I can block the whole thing out.

What are you working on?
